Hello and welcome to the November edition of Tell Me About IT the monthly news roundup from the world of technology and IT.

The nights are drawing in and the office is dark when we leave. It’s that time of year when we all look back at the summer and it seems a long time ago!

Of course the tech world never sleeps and the dark nights make no difference to the amazing speed everything changes.

Still, it’s not all bad… we got to have our pumpkin carving competition in the office so dark nights are well and truly needed for that. Take your pick of the best here.

Here’s what else has been happening in our world…

Windows 10 Devices Launch Event Throws down the Gauntlet to Apple and co.

Microsoft have been playing second fiddle to their main rivals Apple for a while now, but following their Windows 10 Devices Event on the 6th October, Microsoft have well and truly come back fighting, and have thrown down the gauntlet to their competitors in a manner that screams “What ya got?”

Office 2016 has arrived

Office 2016 has arrived

Microsoft have bounced back from the poor reception that met Windows 8 with the excellent Windows 10, and now that Office 2016 has hit the shelves (as of September 22), the software giant is back and firing on all cylinders.

The evolution of Office has gone hand-in-hand with the rise of web-enabled technology and software, and what used to be a productivity suite comprising on five core products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook) is now engineered towards the mobile-and-cloud world that we find ourselves living in.

The apps of Office 2016 are built-in to the new Office 365, which in Microsoft’s words allows you to “work anywhere, anytime, on any device”. Whether it is for business, personal or student usage, the new Office is built around our need to be able to work or play on every device we own – at home, at our work desk or on the move – and have access to everything we’re working on at any given moment.

Computers don’t like pickled onions!

If you were planning on feeding pickled onions to your laptop then stop it right now. It’s not a great idea.

How do we know? Well we had first hand experience of this recently when a client brought their machine in in a panic (and a stink). The accident happened just a few days before some serious work needed to be submitted, and lacing it with pickle wasn’t part of the plan.

We quickly took the important data off the machine and stored it in a cloud once we managed to boot it up.

We fixed the machine and we were once again left to lecture someone about the importance of taking a backup of your data.

Stored amongst the important proposals were family pictures and music. Losing your work is one thing but Aunty Margaret and Van Halen? That’s a risk too far, surely?

Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive can save you from a real pickle so please install them or give us a call and we’ll get you set up.

Summer was busy in the Somerbys IT office

Windows 10 arrived at last and it’s been the talk of the office and our Twitter ever since. First thoughts? Yes, we like it, and it’s much faster than Windows 8. Our MD Allan installed Windows 10 on his wife’s new laptop and it was fairly seamless once the old software was taken off.  Like all new software, it’s not without its issues, and we hope to update you on our findings very soon.

Some shock news this month – Computers don’t like pickled onions! If you were planning on feeding pickled onions to your laptop then stop it right now. It’s not a great idea. How do we know? Read more
